Mammootty brings a dangerous edge to Om

Mammootty plays Burma Karthikeyan, a smuggler with grey shades, in Dhanush's Om, his first Tamil film since Peranbu in 2019.

Mammootty's Om character sounds deliciously difficult to trust. He plays Burma Karthikeyan, a smuggler who looks out for the people and is called 'Siya', The Elder One, by locals and police alike. In the character's own words, he is gold with small traces of copper mixed in, hinting that his morality is considerably murkier than a conventional hero's.

The character introduction gives Dhanush's film an intriguing second centre of gravity: a veteran actor who can make quiet menace feel more unsettling than shouting. Om marks Mammootty's return to Tamil cinema after Peranbu in 2019.
