Karthik Subbaraj refuses the Rs 1,000 crore formula
Karthik Subbaraj says nobody can target a Rs 1,000 crore hit, calling such success magic that cannot be planned.

Karthik Subbaraj has a blunt answer to the obsession with manufacturing a Rs 1,000 crore blockbuster: you cannot simply plan one. Asked at a student masterclass why Tamil cinema has not reached the mark, he said a filmmaker who sets out to make such a film will never attain it, and pointed to KGF and Pushpa as phenomena audiences carried across India and beyond.
"You can't plan for magic to happen," he said. His point lands neatly amid the daily arithmetic surrounding Jailer 2, reported at about Rs 766 crore worldwide and now Tamil cinema's biggest grosser.
